Sytse van der Zee

Sytse van der Zee is beeldend kunstenaar met een atelier in hartje Groningen. Hij werkte als illustrator en was docent en opleidingshoofd bij ArtEZ in Zwolle.

In zijn werk spelen verhalen een rol. Zo publiceerde hij de beeldroman ‘John’s Woodhouse’ (Hoogland en Van Klaveren) en onlangs ‘Parade voor een Spaanse prinses’ (bibliofiel in eigen beheer uitgegeven).

In de series tekeningen die Sytse van der Zee maakt gaat het over schoonheid en (het vermoeden van) drama. Dat drama is niet steeds zichtbaar, het kan ook schuilgaan achter de verwondering over schoonheid. Vaak zijn het nabeelden van wat werd gezien en fantasieën daaromtrent. Toch is het vooral de nieuwsgierigheid naar hoe hij beeld maakt en hoe het er uiteindelijk uit komt te zien dat hem drijft. De uitkomst, de inhoud, is iets dat tussen het uitgangspunt van de maker en het oog van de beschouwer ligt.

 

Sytse van der Zee is a visual artist with a studio in the heart of Groningen. He worked as an illustrator and was a teacher and head of the comic design and animation design departments at ArtEZ University of the Arts.

Stories play an important role in his work. He published the graphic novel ‘John’s Woodhouse’ (Hoogland en Van Klaveren) and recently ‘Parade for a Spanish Princess’ (self-published Bibliophile). Sytse van der Zee’s series of drawings are about beauty and (the suspicion of) drama. This drama is not always visible; it can also be hidden behind the astonishment of beauty. They are often afterimages of what has been seen and fantasies about it. But it is the curiosity about how he makes pictures and what they will look like that drives him. The result, the content, is something that lies between the creator’s starting point and the eye of the beholder.
